School Sports

School Sports

The sports facilities in our school are truly second to none. We offer a wide range of sports catering to all ages and abilities. In the past year our school has partaken in events at Croke Park, Thomond Park, the Gaelic Grounds, the Market Fields and Turner’s Cross. We have also recently visited the FAI’s Abbotstown Complex.

Pupils in Catherine McAuley School play different sports such as basketball, soccer, bocci, gymnastics, Gaelic Football, dodgeball and many others; in addition to Physical Education activities such as Orienteering, swimming at the National 50m pool and regular mixed sporting events with other schools.

School Astroturf

Our Astroturf pitch is used daily and is a fantastic facility to have it also provides a great surface for Mini Golf. It has been featured on RTE News and has been home to training sessions provided by the FAI and Munster Rugby players.

Fully Inclusive Activities

PE is a vital life skill to our pupils and one which we hope they will continue to utilise throughout their lives. To that end, our teachers endeavour to make PE as inclusive as possible and to teach the basic skills required to all pupils in a fun way.

Active Breaks

We encourage Active Breaks on yard every day to encourage physical activity. Playground games with hoola-hoops, balls and building activities are provided on yard every day to encourage pupils to be more active during their breaks.

Facilities and Sports Teams

We have an all weather AstroTurf pitch, a fully equipped gymnasium with shower facilities, changing rooms, an exercise room, a games room and a sensory room. We take great pride in our sports achievements both in the National arena and the International arena and our facilities have helped our pupils to learn the value of exercise in their everyday lives.

Our School on RTE

To celebrate European Schools Sports Day 2020, our school invited RTE’s Cathy O’Halloran and the News2Day crew to speak to our pupils and staff about the importance of sports and games in Catherine McAuley School. We also had Limerick’s All Ireland Hurling winning captain Declan Hannon on hand to help out on the day.
